NHS Charities Together is a diverse network of over 230 NHS charities dedicated to supporting everyone who uses, works in, or cares about the NHS. These charities play a pivotal role in funding vital healthcare services and initiatives that benefit people across the UK.
Jumbo Win is incredibly proud of our partnership with NHS Charities Together for our second Golden Ticket draw. Under this partnership, 20% of every ticket sold in our second Golden Ticket draw will be donated to NHS Charities Together, with a minimum donation of £45,000.
These sort of donations help to fund many amazing initiatives such as the ED Care Navigator Service, run by the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust in Northern Ireland. This service is an example of how funding can create a real, tangible impact on people’s lives.
One of the standout initiatives facilitated by NHS Charities Together funding is the appointment of Kathy Webster, an ED Care Navigator. Kathy’s role is to assist vulnerable patients who frequently attend A&E, helping them navigate the often complex social challenges they face, such as drug and alcohol dependency, homelessness, or unsafe home environments. Her work extends beyond the hospital, ensuring that individuals receive the support they need once they leave the A&E department.
Kathy’s passion for her role is evident. She said:
"I do this role because I care for others, and I know how much the support from the service matters to the individuals it supports. It really can be life-changing for them, to have someone that has the time to invest in supporting them with their complex social needs."
Since starting her post in July 2022, Kathy has worked with over 160 individuals, many of whom face complex challenges that require time, patience, and comprehensive care. The 12-week support programme, while impactful, often stretches longer due to the complexities of individual cases and the wait for additional services. Kathy highlights that her role is not just about providing immediate help but offering sustained support that transforms lives.
The ED Care Navigator Service stands out for its patient-led, holistic approach. Kathy and her team take the time to talk with patients, listen to their concerns, and help them find solutions that address the root causes of their frequent A&E visits. Many of these cases involve more than just medical needs – they require social care and emotional support, which is where the ED Care Navigator steps in.
"That is what is special about the navigator service – it has the time to speak with the patient and use a patient-led, holistic approach to assess needs and plan for support. Very often, there is more to the ED presentations than a medical need."
This combination of healthcare and social care has not only reduced the number of A&E visits but, more importantly, has improved the lives of the most vulnerable members of society.
Jumbo Win’s partnership with NHS Charities Together is a testament to the incredible work being done to support the NHS and its patients. The ED Care Navigator Service is just one of many initiatives that are making a real difference in people’s lives. With continued support, these programmes can help more individuals overcome the complex challenges they face, ensuring that healthcare in the UK remains compassionate, inclusive, and life-changing.
